The short answer

These products solve adjacent rather than identical problems. mooola organises actual history from selected local statement formats. YNAB centres on making a plan for available money and then keeping transactions aligned with that plan.

Choose mooola to understand actual statement history privately

mooola is the stronger fit when you do not want to create and maintain a complete forward-looking budget. It imports selected records you already control and helps organise what actually happened.

  • Selected statement layouts from African Bank, Absa, Capitec Bank, Discovery Bank, FNB, GoTyme Bank, Investec, Nedbank, Standard Bank, and the Absa-managed Woolworths credit card.
  • Local parsing and storage of imported transactions.
  • No banking credentials, direct feed, or mooola-operated financial cloud sync.
  • Categories, monthly views, accounts, subscriptions, and recurring-payment insights.

mooola cannot give every rand a job, reserve money for a future category, create a debt payoff plan, or keep a shared household budget in sync.

Choose YNAB when you want a budgeting method, not only a spending record

YNAB is the stronger fit when the aim is to decide what available money should do before it is spent.

  • A structured budgeting method built around assigning money to priorities.
  • Targets, debt tools, workshops, guides, and an established support ecosystem.
  • Real-time sync across web and mobile devices.
  • Subscription sharing with up to five other people.
  • Manual and file-based transaction entry for regions without direct bank import.

South African users should plan around manual or file-based workflows. YNAB's pricing page says direct import currently supports selected US, Canadian, UK, and EU banks.

YNAB is a cloud subscription; mooola keeps the financial record local

YNAB says its subscription business does not sell financial data. Its privacy policy also describes the personal and financial information needed to provide a cloud service, third-party integrations, international processing, and retention. As checked on 13 August 2026, it says the majority of account data may be retained for up to 24 months after a trial or subscription expires unless the user deletes the account.

mooola's narrower architecture avoids creating a mooola cloud account for imported financial records. This reduces server-side exposure but also removes the convenience of shared budgets and cross-device financial sync. Device backups and the limited network activities documented in the mooola privacy policy still need to be considered.

mooola and YNAB can support different parts of one workflow

  1. Use mooola to import and review a supported South African statement locally.
  2. Identify stable spending patterns, recurring payments, and category totals.
  3. Use that evidence to set realistic YNAB targets and allocations.
  4. Add or import transactions into YNAB through a workflow it supports.
  5. Reconcile both products against the original bank records rather than assuming one app's export will import directly into the other.

This combination adds work and duplicates some records, but it separates private historical analysis from forward-looking planning.

Frequently asked questions

Is mooola a YNAB alternative?

mooola is an alternative for retrospective spending analysis from supported South African statements. It is not a complete YNAB replacement because it does not allocate future income, set budgeting targets, manage debt plans, or sync a spending plan across devices.

Does YNAB connect directly to South African banks?

YNAB states that direct import supports selected US, Canadian, UK, and EU banks. South African users can enter transactions manually or use file-based import.

Can YNAB import a South African bank statement PDF?

YNAB documents file-based import rather than bank-specific PDF parsing. mooola supports selected original digital PDF layouts from named South African banks and a selected Capitec CSV workflow.

Can I use mooola and YNAB together?

Yes. mooola can provide a local view of actual statement history, while YNAB can be used for forward-looking allocation and targets. Transactions must be handled according to each product’s supported import workflow.
