Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about mooola, country and bank support, private on-device imports, app features, installation, and support.

About mooola

What the app does, where it runs, and what it is designed for.

What is mooola?

mooola is a private personal finance app from South Africa with selected bank-statement imports for South Africa, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and other Wise markets. It turns supported and early-access bank statements into a clear view of your spending, categories, subscriptions, recurring payments, accounts, and monthly activity without connecting to your bank.

Is mooola a budgeting app?

mooola is primarily a personal finance organisation and insight tool. It helps you understand where your money went and recognise patterns in your spending; it is not a replacement for professional financial planning or advice.

Does mooola provide financial advice?

No. The app presents general information based on the data you import. It does not provide financial, investment, tax, accounting, credit, or legal advice. Review important information against your original statement or bank records.

Which devices can run mooola?

mooola is available for Android through Google Play. The iPhone and iPad beta is available through Apple TestFlight. See Install and support for details.

Privacy and security

How your banking information is processed, stored, and protected.

Does mooola connect to my bank?

No. You choose a statement file to import. mooola does not connect to your bank and never asks for your online banking username, password, PIN, or other banking credentials.

Where are my bank statements and transactions processed?

On your device. The app reads, checks, and processes supported statements locally. mooola does not collect or receive your statements, transactions, or the financial information produced from them. Temporary file-picker copies are removed after import.

Where is my financial data stored?

Imported statements, transactions, categories, notes, and insights are stored in the app’s local database on your device. mooola does not operate a cloud-sync service or hold a server copy of your banking data.

Do I need a mooola account or login?

No. The app has no mooola user account, login, or cloud sync and does not ask for your name, email address, phone number, advertising identifier, or persistent device identifier. Ordinary app use does not tell us who you are. Your imported financial information stays associated only with the app installation on your device.

Does mooola sell my data or use it for advertising?

mooola does not collect or receive your banking data, so it cannot sell, share, advertise against, or profile that data. The app contains no advertising pixels or advertising-tracking integration. The website loads the Google tag with advertising storage and personalisation denied for limited cookieless measurement. If you select Enable for optional website cookies, the website also loads the Meta and X pixels and grants Google consent for advertising measurement as described in the Privacy Policy.

Does any information leave my device?

Your identity, statements, and transaction records are not sent to mooola through ordinary app use. Limited exceptions are separately disclosed: public merchant-logo requests, platform-controlled device backups, non-identifying basic development activity and sanitised import diagnostics that are off by default, and feedback you deliberately send. None of these is shared with Meta, X, or Google Ads or used for advertising.

What happens to my data if I uninstall the app?

Uninstalling removes the active local mooola database. Your operating system or backup provider may separately retain app data in a device backup if backups are enabled. Because mooola does not hold a server copy, it cannot restore banking data that has been deleted or lost.

How should I ask for help without exposing financial information?

Never upload a real statement or share account numbers, card details, balances, references, or transaction histories. Redact names and identifiers from screenshots and use synthetic examples where possible. For an import failure, tap Send failure logs in mooola and review the disclosure before confirming.

Supported banks and statement files

Current bank compatibility, country expansion plans, and the file formats mooola expects.

Which countries does mooola currently cover?

The Countries page lists current South African PDF and CSV coverage, selected supported and early-access CSV formats for the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and other Wise markets, plus planned statement-format validation for additional African markets and the Philippines.

Which South African banks does mooola support?

mooola currently supports selected statement formats from African Bank, Absa, Capitec Bank, Discovery Bank, FNB, Investec, Nedbank, Standard Bank, and the Absa-managed Woolworths credit card. Support refers to specific file layouts, so not every document produced by a supported bank will necessarily import.

Which Capitec statement format is supported?

Use a supported original Capitec account-statement PDF or the original transaction CSV. PDF support covers selected Main and Access Anytime account statements with selectable text. Screenshots, scans, copied tables, and converted files are not supported. Follow the Capitec statement import guide.

Which Absa statement format is supported?

Support currently targets original Absa e-stamped transaction history PDFs with selectable text. Follow the Absa statement import guide.

Which African Bank statement format is supported?

Early support targets selected original digital African Bank transaction statement PDFs with selectable text. Follow the African Bank statement import guide.

Which Discovery Bank statement format is supported?

Use an original digital Discovery Bank statement PDF with selectable text. Support covers certified digital statements and selected transaction-account statement layouts. Follow the Discovery Bank import guide.

Which FNB statement format is supported?

Use an original digital FNB transaction statement PDF with selectable text. Support targets digital RAND transaction statements and selected Online Banking Enterprise PDF layouts. Follow the FNB statement import guide.

Is GoTyme Bank support confirmed for the Philippines?

GoTyme Bank can issue a password-protected digital bank-statement PDF, but the local layout still needs to be validated independently. A parser for a related Tyme-branded statement does not by itself confirm GoTyme Bank support.

Which Investec statement format is supported?

Early support targets selected original digital Investec bank account statement PDFs with selectable text. Follow the Investec statement import guide.

Which Nedbank statement format is supported?

Support currently targets original digital Nedbank current-account statement or tax-invoice PDFs with selectable text. Follow the Nedbank statement import guide.

Which Standard Bank statement format is supported?

Use an original digital Standard Bank statement PDF with selectable text. Support currently includes selected three-month statement and legacy transaction statement layouts. Follow the Standard Bank import guide.

Which Woolworths statement format is supported?

Support currently targets original digital statement PDFs with selectable text for the Woolworths credit card managed by Absa. Other Woolworths products and cards not managed by Absa are not supported. Follow the Woolworths credit card import guide.

Which Wise CSV format can mooola import?

Early access targets selected original Wise single-currency or jar statement CSV exports. Transfer-list and accounting exports can have different columns and are not automatically supported. Follow the Wise CSV import guide.

Which Monzo CSV format can mooola import?

Early access targets selected original English-language Monzo account-statement CSV exports. Personal, joint, Pot, and business variations may differ. Follow the Monzo CSV import guide.

Which Starling CSV format can mooola import?

Early access targets selected original Starling standard or certified statement CSV exports. Account and product variations are still being validated. Follow the Starling CSV import guide.

Which N26 CSV format can mooola import?

Early access targets selected English-language account-activity CSV exports downloaded from the N26 WebApp. Localised exports may use different headers or number formats. Follow the N26 CSV import guide.

Which Commonwealth Bank CSV format can mooola import?

Early access targets selected original Commonwealth Bank NetBank CSV exports containing transaction date, signed amount, details, and balance. Follow the Commonwealth Bank CSV import guide.

Which Westpac CSV format is supported?

Support is limited to the documented Westpac Corporate Online previous-day closing-balances-and-transactions CSV. Personal Online Banking CSVs and other Westpac exports are not included. Follow the Westpac Corporate Online CSV import guide.

Are scanned PDFs, photos, or screenshots supported?

No. A PDF statement needs an embedded, selectable text layer so the app can parse it reliably on your device. For Capitec, use a supported original PDF or the original exported CSV rather than a scan, screenshot, or converted document.

Why might a statement from a supported bank still fail?

Banks can provide several document types and may change their layouts over time. A file may fail if it is a scan, a different statement product, an unusual or changed layout, or not one of the formats currently supported. mooola fails clearly when it cannot validate a file rather than importing uncertain data.

Is mooola affiliated with the supported banks?

No. Bank names and logos identify compatible statement formats only. mooola is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any supported bank.

Importing and managing data

What happens during an import and how mooola handles accounts and overlapping statements.

How do I import a bank statement?
  1. Download a supported statement file from your bank.
  2. In mooola, choose the matching bank and select the file.
  3. Wait while the app reads and validates the statement on your device.
  4. Review the import summary, then start exploring your updated data.

See the illustrated How it works guide for more detail.

What happens when I import overlapping statements?

mooola reconciles matching transactions rather than blindly adding every row again. The import summary reports transactions as new, updated, unchanged, or ignored so you can see what happened.

Will importing the same statement create duplicates?

The import process checks matching transactions and removes duplicates. Re-importing overlapping data should leave matching records unchanged or update them when appropriate, with the outcome shown in the import summary.

Can I import accounts from different banks?

Yes. You can import statements from different supported banks and see their activity together in one private view.

Can I add several accounts from the same bank?

Yes. mooola can manage several imported accounts from the same supported bank. You can rename accounts to make them easier to recognise and manage each account’s data independently.

How do I refresh my transactions?

Download a newer supported statement from your bank and import it. Statements may overlap; mooola reconciles the matching transactions and adds or updates the relevant data.

Can I remove an imported account?

Yes. Each imported account can be managed independently, including removing that account’s imported data from the app.

What should I do if an import fails?

Confirm that the file is an original supported format and that a PDF has selectable text. If it still fails, tap Send failure logs, review what the sanitised report contains, and confirm the send. Never attach or share the statement itself.

Does mooola send import failure reports automatically?

Only if you explicitly enable Help improve imports. Automatic reports contain sanitised structural diagnostics rather than raw statement text or transaction details. If the setting is off, you can choose whether to send a single sanitised report after a failure.

App features and settings

Spending insights, payment customisation, notifications, and appearance.

What can I understand from my imported data?

mooola organises imported activity into accounts, spending categories, subscriptions, recurring payments, and monthly insights so you can see where your money goes more clearly.

Can I change payment names, icons, or categories?

You can customise the icon, category, and behaviour for matching payments. Those choices can be kept consistent across your transaction history and future imports.

Are notifications and reminders required?

No. Statement-import reminders and upcoming recurring-payment reminders are optional and can be controlled independently in Settings.

What reminders can I enable?

You can choose a reminder before an expected subscription or recurring payment is due and a separate reminder when it may be time to import fresh statement data. Importing new data restarts the statement reminder period.

Can I use light or dark mode?

Yes. Choose System, Light, or Dark in Settings → Appearance.
