How to find subscriptions and recurring payments on a bank statement

Review several months of transaction history, group repeated descriptions, and distinguish card subscriptions from debit orders, scheduled transfers, instalments, and ordinary repeat purchases.

Collect enough history to see a pattern

One statement can reveal monthly charges, but three to twelve months is more useful for quarterly and annual renewals. Include every account and card that may fund recurring expenses. Preserve the original transaction description even if you assign a cleaner name.

Search for the same or similar descriptions, then compare dates and amounts. A charge can shift by a few days because of weekends, processing delays, foreign-exchange conversion, or an unsuccessful first attempt.

Know what kind of recurring payment you found

TypeTypical clueWhy the distinction matters
Card subscriptionA merchant charges the saved card on a repeating schedule.Cancelling the card does not always cancel the contract; contact the provider.
Debit orderThe statement identifies a debit order or collection, sometimes with a mandate reference.Use the provider and bank processes that apply to the mandate.
Scheduled transferA regular EFT created in your own banking profile. You may be able to edit or stop the schedule in your bank.
Instalment or credit agreementA fixed payment to a lender, retailer, insurer, or service provider. It may be governed by a contract and should not be treated as a casual subscription.
Repeat purchaseSimilar merchant and interval, but initiated separately each time.It is a habit, not necessarily an automatic charge.

Review each recurring commitment

  1. Identify the provider. Use receipts, emails, app-store subscriptions, and the original statement description.
  2. Confirm the amount and frequency. Look for price increases, annual renewals, and variable usage charges.
  3. Decide whether it is still useful. Keep, downgrade, switch, or cancel deliberately.
  4. Use the correct cancellation route. Cancel through the provider, app store, bank, or contract process as appropriate.
  5. Verify the result. Keep confirmation and check the following statements.

Treat unknown payments as a banking issue

If you do not recognise a transaction, use your bank’s official app, website, telephone number, or branch to investigate it. Do not post a statement or full transaction details in a public support channel.

Finding recurring activity with mooola

mooola can organise supported imported statements and surface subscriptions, bills, scheduled transfers, and other recurring patterns without connecting to your bank. Predictions depend on the history available and can be incomplete when descriptions, amounts, or timing change.

Import a sufficiently long date range, review the proposed recurring items, and compare important results with the original statements. You can also read how to interpret South African statement entries or use the guide for your bank.

Review recurring payments without linking your bank

Use supported statement files to identify subscriptions and recurring activity privately on your device.
