How to track Apple Pay spending on iPhone

Check Apple Wallet transactions today and preview mooola’s upcoming Shortcuts capture. Apple Pay expense tracking in mooola is coming soon to iPhone.

You can track Apple Pay spending by checking recent transactions in Apple Wallet and reviewing your bank statements. To keep those purchases in mooola between statement imports, we are building optional capture through an iPhone Shortcuts automation.

Apple Pay capture is coming soon to mooola on iPhone. Tap to pay as usual, then open mooola to see supported purchases in your expenses. A personal automation in Apple’s Shortcuts app saves the payment details for you. The feature is still being prepared for release and is not available in the current App Store version.

How to see your Apple Pay transaction history today

Open Wallet on your iPhone, select the card you used and tap a transaction to inspect its details. Apple’s transaction-history guide explains that the history you see depends on your bank or card issuer. Your issuer’s record is the place to check the full history and final charges.

For a spending review in mooola today, use a supported original bank statement. This brings in recorded card payments along with other transactions in the file. The upcoming Shortcuts feature will add supported new purchases after setup; it will not import your old Wallet history.

This guide covers tracking purchases you make with Apple Pay. Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone is a different feature for businesses accepting contactless payments.

From a card tap to an expense

After setup, a Wallet transaction automation will pass the purchase amount, merchant, currency and date to mooola. Those details are saved on your iPhone, ready to be added to Expenses when you next open the app. You will not need to type each supported purchase again.

This starts with new purchases. It does not retrieve your Wallet history or connect to your bank account. Statement imports will still bring in earlier spending and payments made outside the automation.

How Apple Pay tracking will work with Shortcuts

The feature is designed for iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Once it is released, you will find an illustrated guide during onboarding and in Settings → Imports & capture → Apple Wallet.

  1. Enable Apple Wallet capture in mooola.
  2. Create a Wallet transaction automation in Shortcuts and choose the cards that should trigger it.
  3. Add mooola’s Record Wallet purchase action and connect the transaction’s Amount and Merchant fields. You can also include its Name.
  4. Set the payment’s actual currency and use Current Date for the time the automation runs, then save the automation.

Currency needs a little care. A fixed code such as ZAR is suitable only when the payment is actually in rand. For mixed currencies, Shortcuts can ask you each time, which adds a confirmation step. Current Date records when the automation runs, so a delayed automation may not have the exact payment time.

Use one automation for each selected card, without overlapping triggers. Two automations for the same tap can record the purchase twice.

Keep your statements in the picture

When you import a supported bank statement, mooola looks for a unique match using the merchant, amount, currency and date. A clear match connects the captured purchase to the statement entry rather than adding it twice. Ambiguous matches stay separate, so it is still worth comparing your expenses with your statement.

A card-tap automation is not confirmation from your bank that a payment succeeded or settled. Check declined or cancelled payments against your statement. Missing details or unsupported currencies may also prevent a purchase from being added. We are not promising coverage for every card, Apple Watch payment or online purchase.

What to check if a purchase is missing after launch

First check that capture is enabled in mooola and that the Shortcuts automation is enabled for the card you used. The automation must pass the Amount and Merchant to Record Wallet purchase, with the correct currency. If Shortcuts asks for a value or confirmation, complete that prompt.

Open mooola to process saved purchases. Missing details or an unsupported currency can prevent import. Do not create another overlapping automation to fix a missing payment: that can produce duplicates on later taps. Use your bank statement to complete and check the record.

Optional, and kept on your device

You choose whether to enable capture and which cards to include. The purchase details stay on your iPhone. This feature does not require a mooola account, bank credentials or cloud sync, and we do not sell your financial data or use it for advertising.

You can turn capture off in mooola or disable the automation in Shortcuts. Turning it off stops new captures; purchases already saved can still be imported. Removing all app data also disables capture, so an old automation cannot keep saving purchases until you enable it again.

Coming soon to iPhone

We will update the Apple Pay capture page when capture is fully released. For now, the screenshots and guide are a preview, not a feature you can enable by downloading the current app.

On Android, Google Wallet spending capture is available now and uses payment notifications. The Shortcuts setup described here is for iPhone only.
