“Archive Stmt Enq” appears to be shorthand for “archive statement enquiry”. That is an interpretation of the wording, not a definition confirmed by an Absa public transaction-code glossary. Do not use the description alone to decide that money left your account or that a charge is correct.
What Absa does document is an archive-statement download process that can include accepting charges. If this entry appears on your statement, compare the date with any statement requests and check the amount and balance before drawing a conclusion.
What Absa’s published guidance confirms
Absa’s account-management help describes selecting an account, opening Statements and Archive statement, choosing a period and downloading the required statement. That workflow includes a prompt to accept charges.
This supports a connection between archived-statement requests and possible fees. It does not establish that every entry with this abbreviation is a posted debit, what any particular customer should pay, or which action caused your entry.
Absa’s newer Online Banking guide describes a date-range download from the selected account. Interfaces can differ. Read the actual confirmation and charge information shown for your account before requesting another document.
Read the amount and balance, not just the description
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Transaction amount or debit/credit columns | A description by itself does not tell you whether an amount was posted. |
| Separate charge or fee column | Read it alongside the transaction amount and the statement’s explanation of its columns. Do not automatically add it twice. |
| Running balance | Compare the balance before and after the relevant posted entries, allowing for other activity between them. |
| Pending or informational wording | Keep the displayed status distinct from a settled debit. |
| Other entries on the same date | A separate fee, reversal or another transaction may explain a balance movement. |
For example, a zero amount alongside an enquiry description is not, by itself, evidence of a debit on that row. Equally, it does not prove the service was free: check for a separate charge and ask the bank to explain any uncertainty. This is a reading method, not a claim about how every Absa statement layout records fees.
Our bank-statement reading guide explains transaction dates, debit and credit columns, running balances and reconciliation in more detail.
What to ask Absa if you do not recognise it
Contact Absa through the app or contact details on its official website. Have the statement period, entry date, exact description and displayed amount available. Ask:
- What does this description mean for this account and statement layout?
- Which request or service produced it?
- Is the amount a posted debit, a separate fee, a pending item or an informational entry?
- Which pricing rule applied on that date?
- If it is incorrect, how should it be queried and what reference should you keep?
The wording alone cannot prove fraud, a valid charge or a duplicate charge. If you did not request the service or cannot reconcile the balance, raise the specific entry with the bank rather than dismissing it as routine.
Before requesting the same statement again
Check whether you already saved the original file and whether it covers the required account and dates. If a new request displays a charge, review it before confirming. Do not assume repeated downloads are free or that every channel has identical pricing.
If the problem is opening an existing file, use the Absa eStatement troubleshooting guide first. If an organisation wants account details rather than transaction history, it may need a bank confirmation letter instead.
Keep fees separate from everyday purchases
When reviewing spending, identify confirmed bank fees separately and reconcile them against the original statement. Do not count an enquiry description and a separate posted fee as two purchases merely because both appear in an export.
mooola can help organise transactions from supported statements, but it cannot determine whether a bank fee was authorised or should be refunded. Use the Absa import guide for file compatibility and the bank for the meaning of an individual entry.
Sources and limits
Absa’s linked account-management and Online Banking guidance was checked on 29 October 2026. We did not find an official public definition of the exact abbreviation or a universal fee for it. This article therefore explains how to check an entry without presenting either as established fact. mooola is independent of Absa.
