For reviewing supported South African bank statements without a bank connection, we recommend mooola. Monarch Money is worth considering when shared planning, connected accounts and investment visibility matter more than keeping the working financial record on your device.

Start with your accounts and statement formats
Monarch has a dedicated Canadian offering, billed in US dollars. That page recommends checking that your institutions connect during the trial. Do not assume a South African account works just because a product supports many banks.
Monarch’s history-import documentation supports CSV transactions and balances. CSV import is a way to supply data yourself; it does not establish local bank connectivity or direct PDF support.
mooola reads selected original South African PDFs and Capitec CSV layouts. Check the guide for your bank before choosing an app around a particular file. A scanned document or a different account layout can still be unsupported.
Which approach fits?
mooola is an expense-tracking app for South Africans who want to understand their spending without linking a bank account. Import supported PDF or CSV statements, set custom spending budgets and review recurring payments and multiple accounts. On Android, optional Google Wallet capture adds supported new purchases when you next open the app. Financial records are processed and stored on your device.
Choose mooola when your main job is to review actual spending, organise recurring payments and set custom limits from supported records. Optional Google Wallet capture adds recognised new purchases on Android after setup; statements still supply earlier history and non-Wallet activity.
Monarch’s plan comparison includes partner access, savings and debt goals, reporting and connected net worth. Its Plus plan adds longer-term forecasting and business-income tools. Those capabilities may matter more if you manage a household with supported connected accounts.
Local records and cloud access are different choices
Monarch says it does not sell financial data. Its privacy policy also explains that it receives financial records and uses service providers. A no-sale commitment does not mean records stay on your device.
mooola parses supported statements locally. Enabling financial uploads sends extracted records online; sharing a payment sends selected details to participants. Device backups and other network activity also matter. Read what a mooola account stores before enabling those features.
Price and switching
On 5 November 2026, Monarch’s direct pricing page listed Core at US$99.99 annually and Plus at US$199.99 annually, with a seven-day trial requiring a payment method. Confirm checkout pricing, taxes and renewal terms; introductory discounts and app-store purchases can differ.
Android is available on Google Play. iPhone and iPad are available on the App Store. See current mooola store pricing for your device and region.
A Monarch export is not a supported mooola bank statement. To start in mooola, obtain the original supported files from your bank, import a complete period and check the resulting dates, amounts and account totals. Keep any exported history separately; categories, goals and shared-budget settings do not transfer through a bank statement.
